NACOSTI: pioneering open science in Kenya

by marusia

As open research has grown in popularity in Kenya, particularly in higher education and academia, ORCID adoption has also increased.

ORCID Membership in Kenya represents a diverse group of members, including PAMJ in publishing, Strathmore University in higher education, the African Academy of Sciences in funding, and the National Commission on Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) as a key supporter of open research.

To ensure quality in science, technology and innovation, every researcher must obtain a government license to conduct research in Kenya. To support this requirement, NACOSTI provides research licensing, registration of research institutions in Kenya, and accreditation of research institutions.

Navigating a Complex Ecosystem
With such a diverse and complex mission, NACOSTI faces numerous challenges and often has to operate in a highly fragmented environment, manage reporting backlogs, and contend with the need to improve visibility and discoverability.

The problems extend to researchers as well, as they often bear a burdensome administrative burden, juggling multiple profile systems, spending too much time on manual data entry (which also leads to data errors), dealing with misattributed research results, and all while worrying about not having control over their personal data.
